Due to the dramatic flood situation in southern Poland, the Polish Red Cross is expanding its rescue operations and launching a special collection for the victims of the disaster.
Broken dams in Stronie Śląskie and bridges in Głuchołazy have effectively cut off access to many localities, deepening the ongoing crisis. PCK rescue teams have been on site since yesterday, providing humanitarian aid to evacuees, with more teams heading out to assist those affected by the disaster.
The flood situation in southern Poland is worsening by the hour. The breaking of the dam in Stronie Śląskie has led to the flooding of many surrounding areas, further increasing the risk of flooding in the region. Additionally, in Głuchołazy, where evacuations of residents had already been taking place, two bridges collapsed, effectively isolating parts of the city from access to assistance. The mayor of Głuchołazy reported that the situation is dramatic, and the water continues to rise.
In Kłodzko, the situation is not looking better. Broken flood embankments have caused flooding in the city, where the tap water is not safe to drink, and the water supply infrastructure has been severely damaged. The city remains without access to electricity, which further complicates rescue operations. In Kłodzko, the injured are being assisted by rescuers from the PCK Medical Rescue Group from Wrocław who are present on site.

In response to this difficult situation, the Polish Red Cross (PCK) has immediately expanded its rescue operations by launching additional Rescue Groupsfrom neighboring areas. Humanitarian Aid Groups from Zielona Góra and Opole have set up in one of the schools in Głuchołazy, where, together with local services, they assist residents by providing warm beverages and meals to those evacuated from flooded areas.
Currently, assistance in the form of transporting packages with food and water as well as blankets and sleeping bags, caring for evacuated individuals, and support in building sandbag barriers is being provided by Rescue Groups from Czechowice-Dziedzice, Bielsko-Biała, and Wrocław.The situation in Głuchołazy regarding the establishment of a medical point and rescue teams for intervention in the field is being closely monitored. The Rescue Groups from Poznań, Bydgoszcz, Zabrze, Kraków, Przemyśl, Sandomierz, and Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski are on standby to provide support.
We are operating in very difficult conditions, and the situation on the ground is changing by the hour. We are cooperating with local authorities and rescue services to ensure residents have access to basic goods and to provide safe shelter. Thanks to the support of donors, we can operate at full capacity, but we need even more help to effectively assist the most affected individuals
The Polish Red Cross has launched a special collection, to provide necessary funds to help those affected by the flood, including in Stronie Śląskie, Kłodzko, and Głuchołazy.
We encourage everyone to support our efforts. The needs are enormous, and the situation may worsen further. Your help can save lives – appeals Michał Mikołajczyk.
