3 entities of the Movement

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement consists of three complementary entities that jointly carry out a humanitarian mission: the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Cooperation among these three entities enables effective responses to the needs of people in the most challenging situations around the world.

International Committee of the Red Cross

(ICRC, i.e. International Committee of the Red Cross) – was founded on February 17, 1863, in Geneva by the initiative of Henry Dunant and four other citizens of Geneva: Guillaume-Henri Dufour, Gustave Moynier, Louis Appia, and Theodore Maunoir. It is a Swiss institution, private and independent. Its headquarters are located in Geneva. The ICRC has a universally recognized right to initiate humanitarian actions. It primarily operates in situations of armed conflict of an international nature, non-international conflicts, internal fights, and their consequences.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

(Federation, eng. International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) – was established on May 5, 1919, in Paris at the initiative of Henry Pomeroy Davison, with the founding organizations being the American, British, French, Italian, and Japanese Red Cross. It is an international, non-governmental, and independent organization that does not have a political, racial, or religious character. Its headquarters are located in Geneva. It primarily operates in situations of disasters and emergencies.

National Societies of the Red Cross or Red Crescent

(Associations, eng. National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society) – the first was the Netherlands Red Cross established based on the royal decree from 1867. A national society is an organization that plays an auxiliary role to public administration authorities, created under the Geneva Conventions for the protection of war victims from August 12, 1949, Additional Protocols to these Conventions from June 8, 1977, and internal laws, decrees, and legal acts of the state being a signatory to these Conventions. According to the principle of unity, there can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in the territory of a state. It primarily operates for the benefit of citizens and other residents of the country where it exists, in accordance with current humanitarian needs and challenges. Whenever possible, it also supports the activities of sister National Societies by sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices. Currently, there are 191 National Societies in the world. In Poland, the Polish Red Cross operates.
