The Polish Red Cross launches a collection for people affected by the floods in southern Poland
#NaRatunekPowódź

In response to the growing flood threat in southern Poland, the Polish Red Cross (PCK) has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign #NaRatunekPowódź to aid those affected by the impending disaster.

Although the full scale of the destruction and the number of affected people is not yet known, the current situation in the south of the country, especially in the provinces of Lower Silesia, Opole, and Lesser Poland, requires urgent mobilization of resources. The goal of the collection, initiated on Saturday morning by the Polish Red Cross, is to ensure a rapid response to the needs of residents when the flood strikes with full force.

The situation in flood-threatened regions is changing minute by minute

The last few days have brought dramatic hydrological changes in southern regions of Poland.
In places such as Głuchołazy, Oława, Kłodzko, and Racibórz, rivers are rapidly rising, and the water levels in rivers such as Biała Głuchołaska, Ślęza, and Bystrzyca have already exceeded alarm levels. In Głuchołazy, on the night of September 12 to 13, an evacuation of about 400 residents was necessary, and local services, including the fire brigade and the military, have been working tirelessly for another day to strengthen the flood embankments.

The situation is changing minute by minute. Rivers are rising rapidly, and the intense rainfall expected to last until the end of the weekend may lead to even greater destruction, as local authorities continuously report.

PCK is launching a nationwide collection #NaRatunekPowódź, which will enable rapid assistance to those affected

The Polish Red Cross, in cooperation with local crisis management teams, rescue services, and local governments, is already preparing to organize assistance for the most affected areas. The collection aims to raise funds that will be immediately used to purchase essential products and equipment. Among the priorities is ensuring that those affected receive:

  1. Food packages: In the first phase of the aid action, delivering food packages to people evacuated from threatened areas will be crucial.

  2. Drinking water: Damage to water supply infrastructure and water contamination are common consequences of floods. PCK is already preparing stocks of drinking water that will be delivered where local sources cease to function.

  3. Hygiene packages: The flood also poses a sanitary threat. The water flooding the areas is often contaminated, increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. PCK is currently planning to deliver hygiene packages containing cleaning agents, disinfectants, and essential sanitary products.

  4. Purchase of dehumidifiers: After the rescue operation is completed, drying out flooded buildings will be crucial. Money from the collection will enable the purchase of dehumidifiers that will help restore dignified living conditions for residents once the water levels drop.

– We are ready to act immediately – assures Michał Mikołajczyk, a member of the Board of the Polish Red Cross. – Our rescue teams have been on full alert for over a day. The Rescue Groups and the Humanitarian Aid Groups of PCK remain in constant contact with firefighters, territorial defense forces, and local authorities. The collection we are launching is essential for us to act quickly and efficiently, without waiting for the weather to worsen. As the situation develops, PCK teams will respond immediately, delivering help where it is most needed. These actions are being conducted in cooperation with representatives of the most affected districts and the National Coordination Teams of the Rescue Groups and Humanitarian Support Groups.

An appeal for support – every zloty counts

The Polish Red Cross is appealing today to all citizens, companies, and institutions for financial support. The collected funds will allow PCK to respond immediately and implement assistance in areas affected by the floods.

– Every zloty counts – emphasizes Michał Mikołajczyk. Thanks to your support, we will be able to help those who today must evacuate their homes, secure their basic needs, and support them in rebuilding their homes after the disaster. We cannot wait – we must act now to be prepared for the worst scenarios.

Anyone who wishes to support the PCK aid action can do so by donating any amount to account number: 16 1160 2202 0000 0002 7718 3060 or through the PCK.pl website.
The collected money will be used, among other things, for purchasing food, drinking water, hygiene products, and equipment necessary to mitigate the effects of the flood.

PCK will keep informing about the situation in the south of the country and about the ongoing actions. Any questions regarding the collection and PCK activities should be directed to the PCK Press Office.

The West Pomeranian District of the Polish Red Cross is also collecting material donations. From 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM at our headquarters located at Aleja Wojska Polskiego 63 in Szczecin (entrance from Piłsudski street) we have launched a donation collection point.
