The dramatic escalation of military actions in the Middle East has led to hundreds of thousands of people living in fear, uncertainty, without access to basic goods and services, including often electricity, medicine, food, drinking water, and safe shelter. Families brutally separated – on both sides of the conflict – have no contact with each other. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating day by day. In the area of armed conflict, which has been ongoing in this new phase for a month, among many injured and killed civilians are also workers from humanitarian organizations and healthcare services, who were providing aid to those in need and suffering.
The International Committee of the Red Cross, along with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Palestinian Red Crescent and Israeli Magen David Adom, are continuously advocating for the protection of civilians, medical personnel, hospitals, sanitation points, ambulances, and humanitarian aid deliveries.
"Human suffering is occurring on both sides of the conflict, and it is cruel. The death of a son, daughter, sibling, parent is an inhuman tragedy, regardless of where it occurs and to whom it happens. Civilian lives must be protected. There is no hierarchy of pain in international humanitarian law. These rules exist to help save humanity and must be respected."
The worst humanitarian conditions are currently in the city of Gaza. Civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, are also dying in attacks on Hamas infrastructure. Teams from the Palestinian Red Crescent are working on-site around the clock in extremely dangerous conditions to provide first aid and basic health services. Meanwhile, the Al-Quds hospital belonging to this Association has received an order for immediate evacuation while hundreds of people, including many patients in critical condition, were inside: on IV drips, on life support equipment, as well as infants in incubators. According to recent data from Reuters, approximately 9770 Palestinians have died in airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, of which 4008 are children. Tens of thousands of people have been injured. So far, humanitarian support from the Palestinian Red Crescent in the Gaza Strip has reached about 40,000 people, and psychosocial support has reached 2,800.
Magen David Adom mobilized 1,500 ambulances and 10,000 volunteers, including medical rescuers, in Israel. A widespread blood donation campaign is underway, and so far, MDA has collected 50,000 units. The Egyptian Red Crescent has also joined in helping those affected by the conflict in the region. Due to the risk of further escalation of the conflict, associations in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan are also on alert.
A team of war surgeons and a contamination detection specialist have arrived in the Gaza Strip, along with six trucks carrying medical supplies for approximately 5,000 patients and material to purify 50,000 liters of water. Further humanitarian aid deliveries are waiting for safe passage to the crisis-affected areas. According to the UN, currently, 100 trucks of aid are needed daily to provide just the essentials for over 2 million residents of the Gaza Strip.
"The residents of the Middle East need humanitarian aid. For over a month, we have witnessed the enormity of human suffering. In this situation, as the Polish Red Cross, we cannot remain indifferent. That is why we are announcing a fundraising campaign"
