The Senate of the Republic of Poland unanimously adopted a resolution on the 90th anniversary of blood donation in Poland.
In the resolution, the Senate expresses its "highest recognition to the Polish Red Cross, honorary blood donors, and other institutions and organizations that, in care for the health and lives of their fellow citizens, ensure that our country never lacks the most precious medicine – blood."
Senators remind that "in 1935 in Warsaw at 6 Smolna Street, at the initiative of the Polish Red Cross, the Institute of Blood Collection and Conservation was established, the first medical facility in Poland dealing with transfusion problems."
This event significantly contributed to the later fruitful development of blood donation and transfusion therapy in our country. It was made possible by the development in the first thirty years of the twentieth century of European transfusiology, to which a significant contribution was made by "Henryk Gnoiński, a scientist associated with the Polish Red Cross, author of a monographic work dedicated to blood treatment, which earned him the title of habilitated doctor, and in 1938 was published under the title "On Blood Transfusion." This book contributes to a new perception of blood as a healing agent, while simultaneously popularizing the idea of voluntary blood donation.
In the resolution, the senators recognize Henryk Gnoiński and the Polish Red Cross as the "fathers" of Polish blood donation and transfusion therapy, emphasizing that "the Polish Red Cross consistently, throughout all years of organization, rebuilding, and functioning of the public blood service, effectively and efficiently engages in the recruitment of blood donors, without whom transfusion therapy would not be feasible.
Thanks to the efforts of this oldest humanitarian organization in Poland, the Honorary Blood Donation Movement was created, which ensured that Polish transfusion therapy is based on selflessly donated blood. Currently, the promotion and organization of blood donation in our country is handled by many entities, but the title of leader in this field cannot be denied to the Polish Red Cross."
