The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mediated the release of additional individuals detained in Israel and the Gaza Strip. The operation was successfully conducted under a ceasefire agreement reached by the parties, aimed at reuniting families.
Safe return of hostages
The ICRC completed the second phase of the hostage and detainee release operation, conducting coordinated actions aimed at reuniting families. Initially, four hostages were handed over to the Israeli authorities, which was a key element of the implemented agreement on the ceasefire. Throughout the entire release process, the primary task of the International Committee of the Red Cross was to ensure the safe transfer of hostages.
Release of detainees to Gaza and the West Bank
At the same time, the ICRC facilitated the release and transfer of 128 individuals held in Israeli detention centers. Each of these individuals was previously subjected to identity verification and health assessment regarding their ability to travel. In total, 200 detainees were released as part of the operation. The process followed the ICRC’s standard procedures applied worldwide.
Priority is the safety and dignity of released individuals
The ICRC's actions were conducted in close coordination with all involved parties. Ensuring the safety of operation participants and protecting their dignity were of key importance – special precautionary measures were implemented to minimize potential risks. Logistics, including scheduling, location, and procedures, were determined by the parties themselves, and specialized ICRC teams, including medical personnel, were present on-site to provide necessary assistance.
The ICRC continues humanitarian support in the Gaza Strip
Apart from release operations, the ICRC, together with partners from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, intensifies humanitarian assistance for the residents of Gaza. The support includes the delivery of food, medical supplies, and equipment necessary to maintain critical infrastructure, including water and energy systems.
Call for continued compliance with commitments
The ICRC emphasizes the importance of all parties adhering to international commitments that will allow further humanitarian operations to be carried out in a safe and dignified manner. The organization declares its readiness to continue actions for the release of detained individuals and to provide humanitarian assistance in the region.
The Polish Red Cross stands in solidarity with the International Committee of the Red Cross in efforts to protect the lives and dignity of those affected by the conflict.
