In the bonds of blood
About the project
The “W jak nię krew” (In the Way of Blood) program is a nationwide voluntary blood donation initiative that combines the memory of the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising with real medical assistance for people in need of blood. Organized by the Polish Red Cross on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, the campaign lasted from August 1 to October 2, 2024. The program pays tribute to the heroic insurgents, emphasizing the historical role of the Polish Red Cross during this uprising and promoting the idea of sharing this most precious gift, which is blood.
Activities related to the campaign have both a symbolic and practical dimension, responding to the real demand for blood, which is particularly high during the holiday season. At the same time, the program is an opportunity to educate society about the importance of voluntary blood donation as a form of intergenerational solidarity and helping others.

Need
Blood is irreplaceable in saving lives; however, its resources in blood banks are particularly critically low during the summer. The program “In the Bonds of Blood” addresses this urgent need while also serving a symbolic function – paying tribute to the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising who sacrificed their lives for freedom. During the Warsaw Uprising, the Polish Red Cross played a key role in providing assistance to the wounded and sick, often in life-threatening conditions.
Today, the memory of this mission is cultivated through real actions, such as blood drives. The campaign also promotes the idea of voluntary blood donation, encourages new donors, and builds public awareness about the necessity of sharing this invaluable gift.

The historical role of the Polish Red Cross
The Polish Red Cross, the oldest humanitarian organization in Poland, played an invaluable role during the Warsaw Uprising. From the very first days of August 1944, the medical personnel of the PRC, nurses, and paramedics risked their lives patrolling the streets of the city, transporting the injured to hospitals and dressing stations. The PRC's own medical facilities, despite being marked with the Red Cross, were targeted by bombings. An example is the hospital at 6 Smolna Street, which was shelled on August 3rd, and after evacuation, some of the patients found refuge at 3/5 Foksal Street. This facility was also destroyed, burying 80 patients from the upper floors.

A crucial figure was Countess Maria Tarnowska, the vice president of the PRC, who negotiated with the German occupiers regarding the evacuation of the civilian population. Thanks to her determination and courage, it was possible to lead more than 20,000 civilians out of the burning city under the flags of the Red Cross.
