Shelters for the homeless

The shelter in Kalisz is a refuge for people in crisis of homelessness. Thanks to its expansion and modernization, it offers shelter, warm meals, therapy, and safe conditions for 40 people, including those with disabilities. Together we are building a space that restores dignity and hope.

About the project

The project of modernizing the shelter in Kalisz is a key initiative aimed at supporting people in the crisis of homelessness, providing them with a safe shelter, decent living conditions and access to comprehensive assistance. The shelter has been operating continuously since 1997, and its goal is not only to meet basic needs, but also to enable a return to society. This place offers not only a roof over their heads, but also therapeutic support that helps homeless people overcome problems related to addictions and rebuild their lives.

The expansion and modernization of the shelter in 2024 was a response to the growing needs of the local community and new standards set by the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy. Thanks to the investment, the value of which amounted to almost one million zlotys, the shelter was adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, and its capacity allows for the simultaneous accommodation of 40 people. The project was implemented thanks to the support of the City of Kalisz, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and Pratt & Whitney, which shows how important joint actions are to improve the quality of life of those most in need.

Need

Homelessness is a serious social issue in Poland, affecting individuals in difficult life situations. The homeless struggle with a lack of stability, shelter, and access to basic needs such as warmth and food.

During the winter period, the crisis of homelessness becomes even more acute, and the lack of places in shelters and accommodation worsens the problem. The implementation of ministerial standards in 2018 forced many facilities to limit the number of places or expand infrastructure, which further complicated the fight against this issue.

Shelter in Kalisz

The shelter in Kalisz, located at 2 Dobrzecka Street, is a place that has been helping homeless individuals for over 25 years, providing them with shelter and support in overcoming life's difficulties. In 2024, the facility underwent a thorough modernization that completely transformed its appearance. The building's area has been doubled and now totals 166 m2, allowing for the creation of spacious, functional, and user-friendly rooms. As part of the modernization, the following were established:

  • Three dormitory rooms equipped with comfortable sleeping spaces, allowing for the simultaneous accommodation of 40 people.
  • Toilets and showers, including those fully adapted to the needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • Dining room, which for the first time became an integral part of the facility, allowing residents to have meals in dignified conditions.
  • Common room, serving as a space for integration, relaxation, and the organization of therapeutic activities.
  • Laundry and drying room, enabling residents to maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness of clothing.
  • Storage room, a place for keeping personal belongings, which increases comfort and hygiene in the dormitory areas.

Building at the Regional Branch of PCK in Kalisz
Day stay is organized from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The shelter operates year-round, adjusting its opening hours to the changing needs of the residents. During the winter, the shelter is available from 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and additionally, homeless individuals can use the warming room throughout the day. In the summer, the opening hours are somewhat shorter, but the facility still provides shelter and hot meals.

The modern infrastructure not only meets the basic needs of the residents but also enables the implementation of therapeutic and integrative activities. The shelter employs qualified specialists, including therapists and caregivers, who support residents in overcoming addictions and rebuilding their self-worth. An important element of the shelter's activities is also the distribution of hot meals and dry provisions, which help individuals survive the most challenging days.

The expansion of the homeless shelter was a response to new requirements regarding housing standards and the growing needs of the community. Construction work began in June 2023 and was completed in April 2024. Thanks to the commitment of project partners and the hard work of the team, the new facilities have been equipped with equipment that meets the highest standards. The modernization is also a sign of care for people with disabilities, who now have guaranteed access to all rooms.

The shelter in Kalisz is more than just a refuge – it is a place that offers hope for a better tomorrow. For many residents, it represents the first step on the path to regaining life stability, a sense of dignity, and self-confidence.
