Safe pillowcase
Workshops led by volunteers and employees of the Red Cross encourage children to actively participate in their own preparation for emergencies.
Project description
The Pillowcase Project was originally inspired by the events of Hurricane Katrina in the US, when students at a local university were using pillowcases to carry their valuables and essentials during the evacuation of the campus. Inspired by this idea, the American Red Cross developed the concept of using a pillowcase as an emergency kit. The project quickly evolved into a global preparedness education program, which has since become known as the Pillowcase.
The workshops, led by volunteers and Red Cross staff, encourage children to actively participate in their own emergency preparedness. The pillowcase helps reduce real and imagined fears and effectively develops coping skills in children.
Need
Disaster resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, adapt to, and recover from the impact of crises. Practical skills that contribute to disaster resilience can be acquired and then practiced. It has been shown that children who participate in disaster resilience-building activities are better equipped to cope with real-life life-threatening situations.
Research also suggests that educating children about disaster preparedness plays a role in fostering a culture of readiness and resilience throughout the community. Children are positive agents of change in their families and communities. If given the opportunity to participate, they can make very real and positive changes before, during, and after an emergency situation.
How do we help?
The workshops last for one hour and are designed for students in grades 3 and 4 (ages 8-10). They include engaging discussions and interactive activities that help students:
Understanding and discussing the importance of being prepared
Prepare emotionally before, during, and after an emergency situation
Knowing what to pack in an emergency kit
Who helps?
The fight against hunger, poverty, and malnutrition is one of the main tasks of the Polish Red Cross. We carry out actions and programs aimed at combating social exclusion and providing children and youth from poor families with a better start in adulthood.
