On December 5th, at the initiative of the UN, the International Volunteer Day is celebrated worldwide. For the Polish Red Cross, this is a special time, as our organization – both nationally and globally – is largely based on volunteer work. There are 16 million Red Cross volunteers operating around the world.
Anyone can get involved in the voluntary activities of the Polish Red Cross – regardless of nationality, ethnic group affiliation, social origin, gender, religion, language, or political views. We have been a neutral organization for 160 years, never taking sides in any conflict, which allows us to help everyone.
The basic units of our Association where a volunteer can work are: circles, clubs, and groups of the Polish Red Cross. Particularly popular among children and youth are Squirrel Clubs, School and Academic Circles of the Polish Red Cross, and Groups of Social Youth Instructors, while among adults: Honorary Blood Donor Clubs and Senior Clubs.
Due to our mission, the PCK Rescue Groups and PCK Humanitarian Aid Groups, composed of volunteers, are also very important. The Polish Red Cross has been cooperating with authorities and public institutions from the very beginning of its operations in the area of rescue and population protection, supporting humanitarian, medical, and material aid: depending on the needs arising.
"Selflessly helping others brings satisfaction and joy. That is why it is worth being a volunteer of the Polish Red Cross – regardless of age. For young people, it is an opportunity to develop social sensitivity and many skills useful in adult life," explains Patrycja Smolińska, volunteer specialist at the Headquarters of the Polish Red Cross.
This year, the Polish Red Cross is introducing a new tool for registering volunteers – the Internet Volunteer Management System of the Polish Red Cross. Thanks to this modern system, every volunteer will have an individual account, allowing them to access proposed activities and training organized by the local branch of the Polish Red Cross, as well as generate a certificate confirming their volunteer status and continuously share information with the volunteer coordinator in their branch.

The International Volunteer Day is an excellent opportunity to express immense gratitude to our irreplaceable volunteers. "Your commitment, dedication, and heart that you put into our organization are invaluable. Thanks to you, the world becomes more beautiful!" – Jerzy Bisek President
of the Polish Red Cross
