  • Another humanitarian transport from the Polish Red Cross, this time co-financed by donations made through the Revolut Donations feature, delivered aid to hospitals in Ukraine.

  • Revolut raised over 50 million PLN in donations for the Red Cross to assist war victims in Ukraine, while the Revolut app for Ukrainian refugees recorded over 0.5 million downloads.

Revolut, a global financial app used by over 28 million customers worldwide and more than 2 million in Poland, continues its collaboration with the Polish Red Cross for Ukraine. Another humanitarian transport from the Polish Red Cross, this time co-financed by Revolut customers, safely arrived in Kyiv. As part of the transport, with which Revolut was a partner, 25 high-capacity generators were delivered to Ukrainian hospitals. The equipment will increase the safety of the patients inside.

Partnership for Ukraine

Revolut joined forces with the Polish Red Cross and launched an appeal for aid for Ukraine on February 25, 2022. Within 24 hours, Revolut customers from around the world donated the first 1 million euros.
Over time, with the support of more than half a million customers from nearly 50 countries, the value of donations for the Red Cross for war victims exceeded 50 million PLN. The aid campaign has been ongoing for over a year. The Polish Red Cross primarily helps refugees from Ukraine who have arrived in Poland. Simultaneously, through more than 750 transports, 5600 tons of humanitarian aid have been provided. The transports have reached many locations in Ukraine, including Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Odessa.

Aid from many directions

100% of the donations made through the Donations feature in the Revolut app go to charitable partners (Revolut does not charge any fees). Over 28 million customers can give donations with a single click. Recently, a new feature called Collections has appeared in the app. Its purpose is to group partner organizations around a common goal, like the Appeal for Ukraine. This makes it easier to support the Polish Red Cross, the Polish Humanitarian Action, and SiePomaga in providing assistance to Ukrainians.

As a Brit and a Ukrainian, I thank everyone for their unwavering support and invite you to join the appeal from Revolut and the Polish Red Cross. Let’s bring help to those who need it the most. 100% of donations made through the Donations feature in Revolut will go to the Polish Red Cross” – said Vlad Yatsenkoco-founder and CTO at Revolut.

“The Polish Red Cross has so far provided humanitarian aid worth 250,000,000 PLN to people affected by the armed conflict in Ukraine. More than 750 transports with humanitarian aid have reached Ukraine. The financial support from our partners and donors enables us to undertake both immediate and long-term aid actions. Thank you for being with us, because together we can do more”
 – said Michał Mikołajczyk, member of the Board of the Polish Red Cross.

Revolut for Ukraine

In September 2021, Revolut opened a technology center in Kyiv. In December, it announced plans to hire 100 Ukrainian developers. Throughout the end of the year, intensive recruitment took place. On February 8, during a government conference in Kyiv, Revolut became the first international partner of the Ukrainian Diia.City program. The invasion verified the company's plans. After February 24, the priority was the safety and relocation of employees (Revolut hired a specialized company for this purpose). Employees and their families were provided with logistical, psychological, and financial assistance. In addition, Revolut suspended fees for transfers to and from banks in Ukraine. It also blocked the ability to make transfers to and from banks in Belarus and Russia and to recharge accounts with cards from those banks.

Donations and fundraising

On February 25, Revolut launched a global fundraising for the Red Cross to assist Ukrainian refugees through its Donations feature. On March 1, Nik Storonsky, the CEO of Revolut, announced that the company would double every donation up to 1.5 million pounds. It didn’t take long for that to happen. Ultimately, it was possible to collect and donate over 50 million PLN to the Red Cross associations for help to Ukrainian refugees. Revolut also launched fundraising with other partners, such as the Polish Humanitarian Action and the SiePomaga Foundation. That’s not all. Since the invasion, work has begun on an app for refugees within Revolut. On March 14, the company made reloadable hryvnia accounts, cards, and apps available to refugees. It has been downloaded over 0.5 million times.

App for refugees

Refugees move from country to country. The Revolut app for refugees – thanks to reloading in hryvnias, the ability to hold 30 currencies, and make payments in 150 currencies, serves as a practical facilitation. The most customers currently use it in Poland (over 140,000) and Germany (over 100,000), followed by countries like Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, and Spain. Customers of the Revolut app for refugees have generally made card payments in 2 or more countries, e.g., refugees in Portugal paid with a card on average in 4.65 countries, while those in Spain did so in 3.42 countries. This may indicate the difficult journey they have gone through. The number of users of the app is steadily increasing.
