#odNOWAzPCK – a long-term assistance program for flood victims

Even though half a year has passed since the September flood, many families are still struggling with its effects. The consequences are felt in many communities and some of the victims still cannot return to their homes, the renovation of which requires huge financial outlays. Some have lost their life's work, others their source of income, which means that support is still very much needed.

The Polish Red Cross has been helping flood victims from the very beginning and has consistently implemented long-term aid projects under the slogan #odNOWAzPCK. Their aim is to rebuild and renovate destroyed homes and support in returning to normal life.

The Polish Red Cross, thanks to the support of individual, business and institutional donors, has raised over PLN 40 million to help people affected by the flood. Thanks to this, we are currently helping with renovations and supporting families and lonely seniors in rebuilding their safe place on earth. PCK branches are working with local authorities to thoroughly examine the needs and qualify those most in need for the program.

What are we doing?

Image

Financial and material assistance
We will provide families with funds for rebuilding their homes and renovating them in the form of vouchers or prepaid cards, which they can use to purchase furniture, appliances, or household items, as well as necessary building materials. They can also use these funds for their current living expenses, which are often very difficult after losing their home and job.

Equipping institutions and facilities
Based on applications, we allocate funds for the equipping of institutions such as schools, kindergartens, hospitals, nursing homes, or other public utility places.

Help for Families and Seniors
In cooperation with local authorities, we reach the most needy families and lonely seniors who are often helpless in the face of tragedy. In the first phase of assistance, we organized Green Schools for students, and we are currently preparing summer camps for children from flooded areas and rehabilitation stays for seniors.

Education for the Future
We organize training sessions and workshops that help better prepare for potential future events. The Polish Red Cross runs an educational program for children and adults under the slogan "Be Safe", which teaches how to prepare for crisis situations, including events such as floods.

Psychological Support
We offer psychological assistance because we understand how important it is to rebuild not only a home but also a sense of safety and stability.

Rapid assistance from the Polish Red Cross from the first days of the flood

  • On the same day that the flood hit the southern regions of Poland, rescue teams from the PCK Rescue Groups and Humanitarian Aid Groups operating in those areas were deployed to assist the flood victims. In the following days, groups from all over Poland joined in. PCK employees and volunteers began organizing collections and support for those affected.
  • In evacuation sites, we distributed:
    - 215 industrial dehumidifiers for removing moisture from buildings and infrastructure, which are still being loaned to residents drying out their homes,
    - 237 electric heaters and 3 oil heaters providing warmth,
    - 250 radiators and 150 electric cookers,
    - over 3,000 hygiene packages and sleeping packages enabling the evacuees to have dignified living conditions.

  • We participated in strengthening flood embankments. Every day, we provided water and over 6000 meals for volunteers and residents securing the embankments.
  • We delivered food and water to hard-to-reach areas, such as Głuchołazy, Kłodzko, and many other towns cut off from the world in the first days of the flood.
  • For weeks, we delivered food and hygiene supplies, collected during PCK drives across Poland, totaling nearly 900 tons in over 200 transports.
  • We were designated for comprehensive coordination of humanitarian aid and medical support throughout the entire municipality of Stronie Śląskie.
  • We organized Green Schools for over 800 children.
  • We provided psychological support, collaborating with psychologists from the University of Lower Silesia DSW in Wrocław. We launched a free psychological support hotline for individuals dealing with trauma and stress caused by the flood.
